VIEW -- The next generation

We have just merged the branch of our major rewrite of the visualization code of BALL back into the main CVS branch. It provides a plethora of new features and is the last major milestone before the final 1.0 release. Pre-release snapshots of the new stand-alone viewer are available for download.

The new VIEW contains a number of changes and additions:

  • A simplified directory structure. The MOLVIEW and VIEW directories have been merged into a single VIEW directory with a straight-forward structure. Also the two distinct libraries, libVIEW and libMOLVIEW are now just one, as they were used in conjunction in all but very few cases.
  • A wider range of molecular models. We have enhanced the surface models, added a cartoon model for secondary structures and significantly improved the range of coloring possibilities.
  • Representations. Each molecule or system, or subset thereof may now have multiple representations. Each of these representation may be controlled independently in a special widget.
  • Threading in molview. You can now modify the visualization while a simulation is running in an independent thread. This makes full use of dual CPU machines.
  • ....

You can get a glimpse of the new VIEW by trying one of the recent snapshots. It might not yet be all that stable, but it might be worth a try.
